Guide · Google Ads

Is Google Ads worth it for a small business?

It can be the quickest way to get enquiries, or the quickest way to spend money. The difference usually comes down to a few things you can check first.

The short answer

Google Ads is worth it when people search for what you sell, a customer is worth comfortably more than it costs to win one, and the account counts real enquiries rather than clicks. Most accounts that "didn't work" failed on one of those three, not because Google Ads doesn't work.

When it pays off

Worth it for some. Wasted on others.

When Google Ads is worth it

  • People search for what you sell. Google Ads only reaches people who are already searching. If they are, you're in front of them at the moment they're looking.
  • The work is urgent or valuable. Emergency jobs and big-ticket services justify a click far more easily than a small one-off sale.
  • You can answer quickly. Paid enquiries go cold fast. A business that picks up the phone or replies the same day wins more of them.
  • Your landing page converts. A page built around the one thing you want visitors to do turns the same clicks into more enquiries.
  • You want numbers you can check. Every click, call and form can be tracked back to the search that produced it.

When it wastes money

  • Tracking counts the wrong things. If page visits or button clicks are counted as leads, the account looks great while the phone stays quiet.
  • Targeting is too broad. Paying for searches that were never going to become customers is the most common leak we find.
  • Every click goes to the homepage. A homepage asks visitors to find their own way. Many won't bother.
  • It's set and forgotten. Search terms, costs and competitors change constantly. An account nobody looks at drifts.
  • The budget is spread too thin. Trying to cover every service and suburb at once often means none of them gets enough to work.

Most of the second list can be fixed. That's usually what we find when we audit an account someone's given up on. See our Google Ads management service.

Before you spend anything

The numbers to check.

1

What a customer is worth to you

Not the first invoice: what a typical customer is worth to the business, including repeat work. This is the number everything else gets compared against.

2

How many enquiries become customers

If you win one job in every three quotes, an enquiry is worth a third of a customer. Knowing that tells you what you can afford to pay for one.

3

What clicks cost in your area

Google Ads' own keyword planner shows rough costs for your searches and area. Capital cities usually cost more than regional towns.

4

How many clicks it takes to get an enquiry

This depends mostly on your landing page and your offer, which is why fixing the page is often the cheapest way to make ads worth it. See conversion rate optimisation.

The usual alternative

Google Ads or SEO?

Ads work from the day a campaign is live and stop when the budget does. Search engine optimisation (SEO) takes longer and keeps going. We've compared them side by side in Google Ads vs SEO, and answered the SEO side in is SEO worth it?

Common questions

Google Ads questions.

How much should I spend on Google Ads?
It depends on three things: where you are, who you're up against and how well the account is set up. A click in a capital city can cost several times what the same click costs in a regional town, and a well-built account wins far more enquiries from the same budget. We give you a real number in the free marketing review, based on your business, rather than a range that won't fit it.
Why didn't Google Ads work for me before?
The most common reasons we see are tracking that counts the wrong things, targeting that pays for irrelevant searches, and clicks sent to a page that doesn't convert. None of them mean Google Ads can't work for your business; they mean the account needs rebuilding.
How quickly can Google Ads produce enquiries?
Ads can show as soon as a campaign is approved, which makes them the quickest way onto the first page. How quickly the enquiries follow depends on your market, your budget and your landing page, so we won't promise a date for that part.
Can I run Google Ads myself?
You can, and plenty of businesses do. The risk is paying to learn: broad settings and default recommendations tend to spend budget on searches that were never going to become customers. Our free Google Ads guide covers the basics.
Is there a lock-in contract?
Not with us. Our plans are month-to-month with 30 days notice and no minimum term, and the account is set up under your billing, so it stays with you along with all of its history.
Is Google Ads better than Facebook ads?
They do different jobs. Google Ads reaches people already searching; Facebook and Instagram ads reach people who aren't yet. For most service businesses, Google Ads is the better starting point. See Meta Ads management for the other side.
